United States of America : Geography

The United States stretches from the Pacific on the west to the Atlantic on the east. It is situated entirely in the western hemisphere and is bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The interior of the country is a sprawling lowland which stretches from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada and then to Alaska. The United States can be divided in three different physiographic regions – the Atlantic and the Gulf Coastal plains, the interior lowland and the Canadian Shield. Not only does the United States have a wide range of geographic features, it also experiences almost all climate types because of its vast expanse. It is tropical in Hawaii, polar in Alaska, arid in Great Basin, semi-arid in Great Plains, and desert in the southwest. Extreme weather conditions like hurricanes and tornadoes are not uncommon in the US.

The country has also diverse plant and animal life with more than 17,000 identified native species of flora. It also boasts of 400 mammals, 500 reptiles, and about 90,000 insect species. It has about 58 national parks and several federally managed forests and wilderness areas.
