The United States of America also known as United States comprises of 50 states and a
federal district. The country is located in
central North America with its forty-eight contiguous states and
Washington D.C the country
capital which lies between the
Pacific and
Atlantic oceans bordered by Canada to the south and Mexico on the south. The country spreads in 3.79 million square miles and is the
fourth largest country in the world. The economy of U.S is
world’s largest economy. The world’s oldest surviving federation is United States which consists of
Constitutional Republic and
Representative democratic. The regulation of the government is done by a system of checks and balances defined by the
constitution of
United States which is country’s
supreme legal document. According to American federalist system the people are subjected to three levels of government:
federal,
state and
local. The duties of local government are divided between county and municipal governments. In almost all cases, executive and legislative official are elected by plurality voting by the citizens.
The federal government comprises of three branches:
- Legislative: The bicameral congress comprising of Senators and House of Representatives, makes federal law, declares war, approves treaties and has the power of purse.
- Judiciary: The Supreme Court and other lower courts whose judges are appointed by the President and Senators approval interpret laws and overturn those which are unconstitutional.
- Executive: The president and commander in chief of the military can veto legislative bills before they become law and appoint the members of cabinet.
The House of Representatives has 436 members each representing a congressional district for two year term. The Senators has 100 members each state having two senators elected at large to six-year terms. The President Server four-year term and cam be reelected no more than twice. The President is not elected by direct vote but by indirect Electoral College. The Supreme Court, led by the chief justice consists of nine members who serve for life.
All laws and governmental procedures are subjected to judicial review; any law ruled in violation of the constitution is voided. The constitution has been amended twenty-seven times, the first ten amendments which make up the Bill of Rights, and Fourteenth Amendment form the central basis of American’s individual rights.
